Low-NO oil pressure on SBC 350 - Club Hot Rod Forums
May 14, 2005· Low-NO oil pressure on SBC 350. I have this engine and it is was just rebuilt before I bought it and had never been run. I have it in the vehicle and it fired up and sounds awesome but there is very little oil pressure. I primed the pump with a drill and ran it for about 20 minutes. I have very little oil coming out of the Pushrods.
Low / No oil pressure question sbc 350 | Team Camaro Tech
May 03, 2009· First off, what you think is great oil pressure (40-50 psi) when initially started ain't so great!.....The engine oil pressure should be between 65-75 psi when initially started (cold)!.....When the engine is up to operating temperature (hot) it is normal to drop to 35-40 psi but never any lower!.....These oil pressures are based on using a straight 30 weight motor oil.....I doubt using a thicker viscosity oil will increase the oil pressure
Sbc very low oil pressure. Use thicker oil? | Hot Rod Forum
Hey guys the 350 in my car has very very low oil pressure at hot idle. Cold idle its very good. Hot idle in gear is literally sitting just over 0 on the gauge. In neutral it comes up to like 4 or 5psi, then when cruising it looks ok. Just slightly under 20psi. The annoying thing is that it doesn't have many miles since rebuilt.

Low idle oil pressure is a common issue on 350's like your 10# at idle. I've seen a lot of folks get tied up in their underwear over it and they have spent a lot of time and money trying to fix something thats not broken. Oil flow is the more important issue, if your pressure rises 10# per thousand rpm I would leave it alone and just drive it.
fresh rebuilt 350 overheating - Club Hot Rod Forums
Oct 28, 2013· Okay everyone I am new to the club and I am in dire need of some help, I just rebuilt a 350 small block. I took apart my old block and reused the crank, rods, pistons, and heads (TBI heads) other than that everything is new. 1st thing I did was sent the new block to the machine shop to have it hot tanked, cleaned and inspected after I got the a okay from the machine shop I started the rebuild.
Diagnosing incomplete oil pressure on a small-block Chevy
I purchased a new 350-cubic-inch GM crate motor. No oil gets to the rocker arms on the passenger side. There’s plenty on the driver’s side, and a mechanical oil-pressure gauge shows about 40 psi. I’m using a Speedmaster oil primer and a half-inch corded variable-speed drill with plenty of power to prime it.

So the engine is completely rebuilt, new rods, rings pistons, bearings, and JG BR30 At start up the oil pressure is back to 50psi when cold start idle. Once a heat cycle through the engine, we shot it down changed the filter to get all the assembly lube. New filter and another quart of JG BR30. On 5 mile test drive oil pressure drops again.

At start, the oil pressure is in the normal range. After warm up (195 D) the oil pressure will drop if it idles down to 10psi. The low pressure alarm goes off until an increase in rpm which raises pressure. After several more minutes of running, the oil pressure is close to normal, no alarms and runs ok.
Oct 21, 2003· I have a 350 sbc & oil pressure is at 5psi during idle & 20psi at cruising. I have lifter noise, and there isnt any oiling under the valve covers except at high rpm. Hot idle pressure is about 20 psi, moving right up to about 50 psi at 2500 rpm or so. However, under WOT, the pressure drops from about 55 psi down to about 35 when the rpm gets up to about 4500. However, if we gear down and run the engine at a constant 4500 to 5000 rpm, there is no pressure drop. It only drops under WOT.

It has been a long time since I posted here. I have a 283 sbc out of a 66 chevelle installed in my '57 Willys CJ5. It has been completely rebuilt to stock with 305 heads, Edelbrock performer intake and carb, stock oil pump and pan, stock cam. Between 35 to 45 psi at idle and up to 55 lbs at speed would be sufficient. I run 5W30 Mobil 1 in my daily driver. As I'm sure you won't be doing any sub-zero driving. a synthetic 10W30 would be good for street use. While breaking the engine in, use dino oil so the rings will seat.

May 21, 2020· Yes, another oil question. Figure to run it a short while then change the oil. Looking for some oil that's actually has the correct additives for my old flat tappet small block. The car has been sitting up the past 4 years. The engine was running exactly as you described, including no oil pressure at idle (about 450-500 rpm) and about 40 psi at cruising (3,000 rpm). I changed the fluids, using 10w-30 oil, and installed new plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, plus new fuel filter.

And again, rest assured that this is not a Hot Rod build. It's all about torque and where it should be. A little history: The very first SBC's all incorporated a quench style chamber. These chambers fall into the "wedge shape" category. This is the first Chevy V-8 in the 265 cu in version.
The gm fuel pressure regulators were prone to fail. I'm not certain on the Ramjet but if your pressure regulator is like a lot of the post TBI regulators it will have a vacuum hose running to it. Unplug the vacuum hose and crank the motor. With a complete failure it will shoot fuel out the vacuum port.

The pressure floating the crank and rods is only developed by rotating the crank (50 psi at the main bearing would last perhaps 1 second); the "pressure" is only a rough indicator of how fast the pump refreshes the oil going through. Low pressure at speed means that the leak (radial clearance) is losing oil faster than the pump can supply it

The Melling M55A is the old Z28 replacement pump;at one time Melling said 'slightly higher volume and pressure'.I've used it many times with good results on mild hot rod engines.I would leave the spring as it is.The average,or slightly above average,SBC does just fine with the stock
Up til '69, Chevy had oil pressure gauges in their gauge pack option. People would compare their Chevy to a neighbor or friend with higher oil pressure and demand a new motor or a repair from the dealer under warantee, even though there was no problem. In '70, if you ordered a gauge package option on a Chevy car, there was no oil pressure guage.
The roller has its lobes centered in the lifter bore,,,,,the flat tappet cam has it’s lobes offset to one side . That is to help make the lifter spin,,,,,,as the lobe pushes on the lifter . Imagine it passing by on the edge of the lifter face . The lobe still sees the entire lifter face,,,,,just part of it at a time .

A recent search of auction and classified sites shows prices for a Rallye 350 are fairly reasonable. An internet search found examples for sale ranging from $16,000 to $36,000. These prices are roughly half the asking price of the 1970 442. Just like it was in 1970, the Rallye 350 is still an affordable muscle car today.
Running thinner oils in an older engine might possibly cause it to burn oil (or more oil than it does). That said, for a good tight engine 5/30 or 10/30 should be fine--if you aren't sure, try it and watch your oil pressure on the real hot days, esp. at idle. If you don't like what you see switch to

And, when you shop for an aftermarket filter, make sure it is a direct replacement for the PF35, and not a replacement for the PF1218. These filters are the same size and both fit the same cars, but the PF1218 has an antidrainback valve that does no good on an old Chevy small block where the filter sits vertical.
Why does my SBC 350 run like crap with a PCV valve
I determined that with the PCV valve hooked up, my SBC 350 will not idle right, it just fluctautes up and down. With the line removed and capped off it sounds great, no RPM fluctuations. My setup is the PCV in the passenger valve cover and a K&N oil
How do you bypass the ac pressure switch? | TDIClub Forums
Jul 23, 2006. #3. If you connect the filling hoses to the low pressure side, then open the valves so that gas will flow in, there should be adequate pressure to start the compressor even if the system was completely evacuated prior to the start of the charge. Also, since there is no accumulator in between the compressor and the low side port
Looking Beyond the Cooling System for Common Overheating Cures
A proper air/fuel mixture will help your engine run cool and to its full potential. Most overheating issues related to air/fuel ratios are the result of a lean mixture, which causes the cylinders to run hotter. On most carbureted systems, fuel pressure typically ranges between 5 and 8psi at all speeds.
i am gonna change my oil pump to a high volume so i get
1: low oil level to start with. 2: inadequate drainback. 3: extended high rpm. Can the SBC survive on 30lbs of idle pressure (Even 15lbs at idle is fine) and 45lbs @ 1500-2000 rpm and above? Yes and for as many miles as the engine still runs. No need in wasting power pumping oil when it does no good, and can actually be detrimental.

04-24-12 11:32 AM - Post# 2218686 In response to Impala65SS I posted this a couple of times, maybe it's helpful: Here we go, this is the oil pressure info from the '94 factory service manual, the info is specific to the 5.0 and 5.7 TBI's but I think it's the same for the 4.3; I could look it up if need be but if I recall it took me a while to find it in the book.
synthetic oil in old school engine...good idea or bad idea
May 27, 2011· However, shortly after I used it for the first time in my SBC 383, I noticed that the engine developed a small oil leak. This appears to be a common problem with older style engines. Unless you are driving 10,000+ miles per year, I'm not sure it is good choice, and a high zinc/phorphorus oil changed at least twice a year is a better choice.
